On the last night of 100 consecutive live streams of a different original and different cover, I played a song about the way music can bring us together. I asked listeners to record themselves singing along and send their recordings to me.
The project has quickly gathered momentum, with over 100 submissions coming in from as far away as the US, UK, Ireland and Europe, including one singer recording from a van in a national park outside Berlin where he is escaping lockdown, all have been included on the recording.
Artists from around the country including internationally acclaimed indie-folk legends such as Stu Larsen, Jed Appleton, and Aine Tyrrel, as well as a host of local artists such as Ryan Martin John, Emma Luker, Sasha March, Bjear, and many more jumping on board. But the majority of submissions are from non-performers.
A highlight of the project was the involvement of With One Voice choir – an Adelaide-based choir set up to combat social isolation in the wake of covid. We recorded their parts in an old church in the heart of the city. Listen carefully and you can hear the floorboards creaking.
lyrics
Like a good thing gone
Like the fog that lifts at dawn
Like two bodies leaning close just keeping warm
It was a nameless feeling that pulled us through the door
When we went out
And the reasons we came
Were not the reasons we stayed
But our eyes were closed the moment that everything changed
With the melody sweet and the words running deep in our veins
Oh we went out
And we held our glasses up
As we listened in the dark
To the sound of somebody singing right out of their hearts
Like the world was a whole and we were all beautiful parts
We went out
This is why we went out
So let’s drink this wine like it’s water and see in the morning again
Because we’ve been to the bottom but this is not falling
With our arms round our brothers and sisters and strangers and friends
We’ll sing like we mean it, like we have all seen it, we’ll sing like we’re breathing again...

‘Australia has a healthy number of musicians exploring the sounds of folk music so it's impressive
when one comes along that really stands out. Tim's voice is like cut marble - it's aesthetically impressive but it also carries a hefty weight with it - and Tim uses that voice masterfully.’ Dave Ruby Howe, Music Director - Triple J Unearthed
